KPKM to reassess food security after May amid global tensions

KPKM will review national food stocks post-May as West Asia conflicts persist, with current supplies of rice, chicken and vegetables deemed sufficient until then.

SHAH ALAM: The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) will reassess the country’s food stocks after May. This review comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia that could impact supply chains.

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu stated that the supply of basic items like rice, chicken and vegetables is currently sufficient at least until May. He advised the public against engaging in panic buying.

“We will monitor developments from time to time until May. We hope the war will end soon,” he told reporters. The government is closely monitoring the food supply chain to prevent cartel activity.

This surveillance is being conducted jointly with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN). The aim is to ensure no party takes advantage of the situation to manipulate supply prices.

Mohamad spoke after launching the Agro MADANI Sales Programme for the Kota Raja Zone at Padang Rakyat Jalan Kebun. The programme is organised by the Selangor Farmers’ Organisation Authority (LPP) in collaboration with 14 Area Farmers’ Organisations.

It offers a wide range of agricultural produce and local agri-food products directly to consumers. Mohamad said this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen national food security.

It also helps the public cope with the rising cost of living. Visitors can obtain daily necessities like fresh chicken, eggs, meat, cooking oil, vegetables and fruits at significant discounts.

These Agro-Based Industry products are sold at 10 to 30 per cent below current market prices.
