KPWKM urges caution as floods claim two lives in Kelantan

KPWKM calls for vigilance after two flood deaths in Kelantan, urging residents to stay safe as severe weather persists

PETALING JAYA: With severe weather expected to persist, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) is calling on Malaysians to prioritise safety after two flood-related deaths were recorded in Kelantan.

In a statement today, its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri expressed condolences over the deaths recorded in Gua Musang on Nov 21 and Tanah Merah on Nov 26, extending sympathies to the families of the victims.

“The Social Welfare Department (JKM) had been mobilised early in coordination with state governments and disaster-response agencies.

“Additional PPS can be activated at any time should weather conditions worsen, while food supplies, blankets and essential items remain sufficient and will continue to be distributed according to needs on the ground,” she said.

Nancy urged residents in high-risk areas to stay alert, comply with instructions from authorities and relocate to PPS immediately when directed.

She also reminded families to prioritise the safety of children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities, and to avoid rivers, low-lying areas and locations prone to sudden flooding.

“KPWKM will continue to monitor the situation closely through JKM and ensure all affected families receive prompt and compassionate assistance as the challenging weather conditions persist,” she added.

As of Nov 28, the flood situation remains severe with 242 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) operating nationwide, sheltering 27,489 victims from 9,033 families.

A weather warning issued by MetMalaysia at 10pm on Nov 27 forecast continuous heavy rain in several states, including Terengganu, Pahang, Selangor, Putrajaya and Negeri Sembilan.

Other states such as Perak, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Johor remain under severe and alert-level warnings.
