LKIM to investigate Rohingya claims at Terengganu complex

LKIM will probe allegations of Rohingya involvement in fish unloading at its Pulau Kambing complex, with firm action promised if violations are found

PARIT BUNTAR: The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) will take appropriate action against any party following allegations of foreign national involvement, particularly the Rohingya ethnic group, in fish unloading activities at the LKIM Complex in Pulau Kambing, Kuala Terengganu, recently.

LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil said a detailed investigation would be carried out to ascertain the facts surrounding the claims, which have gone viral on social media.

“The Kuala Terengganu Selatan Fishermen’s Association (PNKKTS) has denied the alleged involvement, but the information circulating requires further scrutiny.

“If investigations find elements of legal violations or the involvement of any party, including agency personnel, firm action will be taken in accordance with existing regulations and legal provisions,” he said.

He said this when met at the Rahmah Mesra MADANI programme at Kampung Sungai Betul Bawah Tanjung here today, which was also attended by LKIM Perak director Ahmad Zulkifli Ismail.

He said he had also requested that security controls at all LKIM complexes be enhanced to prevent trespassing or rule violations.

On June 7, PNKKTS chairman Mohd Razif Embong denied allegations that foreign nationals, including the Rohingya ethnic group, were allowed to enter the complex for fish unloading activities.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Faiz said RM10 million has been allocated this year for the Special Fishermen Housing Project (PKPN), involving the construction of 36 new housing units and repairs to 344 houses nationwide.

“For Perak, two new houses have been built and three houses repaired, involving a total allocation of RM228,000,” he said.

He added that the overall allocation reflects LKIM’s continued commitment to improving the welfare and living standards of the fishing community nationwide.
