Malaysian Media Council to drive media industry standards after AGM

Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching says the Malaysian Media Council will establish dispute resolution and ethics guidelines after its first AGM

SEGAMAT: The Malaysian Media Council’s first annual general meeting on November 7th will mark a significant turning point for the country’s media industry.

This meeting will establish the council as the primary driver of professional standards and media freedom in Malaysia.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching expressed hope that the council would create effective dispute resolution mechanisms.

She stated that the council would also develop guidelines and ethics to address modern media practice issues.

“Furthermore, any party feeling a report is unfair can bring their dispute to the Media Council for resolution,” Teo explained during a media conference at the Siang Hai Recreation Centre.

She confirmed that council leadership would be elected by members after the inaugural AGM rather than government-appointed.

This change will enable the council to operate more independently and strengthen Malaysia’s media ecosystem.

The inaugural AGM will also discuss electing Council Board members according to Section 8(4) of the Malaysian Media Council Act.

Meeting participants will determine procedures for future AGMs and set membership fees.

The agenda includes establishing standard operating policies and approving the council’s 2026 budget. – Bernama
