African countries seek to adopt Malaysia’s affordable, safe internet model, with initiatives like NADI and social media safety measures highlighted at WTDC-25
BAKU: Several African nations have expressed interest in adopting Malaysia’s model for affordable and secure internet access.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the interest following discussions at the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025.
He will share Malaysia’s initiatives including the National Information Dissemination Centre and social media safety measures during the conference.
“These are among the things I believe will greatly interest my counterparts at WTDC-25,” Fahmi told reporters after the opening ceremony.
He noted that African counterparts likely want to understand Malaysia’s implementation processes, legal frameworks, and challenges faced.
International Telecommunication Union leaders also emphasised meaningful connectivity during the conference opening.
Meaningful connectivity ensures broader and more secure internet access for all communities.
Fahmi is leading Malaysia’s delegation and will hold bilateral meetings with counterparts during the event.
He will exchange views on best practices for achieving meaningful connectivity across different nations.
“Not all countries have deployed 5G as quickly or effectively as Malaysia; some use different strategies,” he observed.
The minister emphasized mutual learning opportunities between Malaysia and other developing nations.
“There is much they can learn from us, and we, from them,” Fahmi added.
WTDC-25 serves as a key platform to ensure no community is left behind in digital development.
The conference is organized by the International Telecommunication Union and hosted by Azerbaijan.
It runs until November 28 under the theme “Universal, Meaningful, and Affordable Connectivity for an Inclusive and Sustainable Digital Future.”
Discussions will focus on strengthening global connectivity that is universal, affordable and meaningful. – Bernama
