Military housing FTTH project to be completed by early 2026

The nationwide FTTH project for Armed Forces housing will be finished by Q1 2026, providing 59,000 homes with high-speed internet

PUTATAN: The nationwide Fibre-to-the-Home project for Armed Forces Family Housing is scheduled for full completion by the first quarter of 2026.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said implementation works are progressing smoothly and satisfactorily.

He noted that fibre optic cable and monopole installations around military camps are actively underway.

“For the Fifth Infantry Division Headquarters at Lok Kawi Camp, the project involving 500 housing units is expected to be completed before the end of this year,” he told reporters.

Fahmi spoke after inspecting the FTTH project and a Point of Presence facility at Sekolah Kebangsaan Lok Kawi.

The project covers 73 military camps nationwide with more than 59,000 housing units.

It results from a collaboration between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the Armed Forces through a memorandum of understanding signed on Oct 11, 2024.

Under the programme, military personnel can subscribe to the Perajurit Broadband package at RM49 monthly for 100 Mbps speeds.

A promotional rate of RM39 per month is available for the first six months.

Regarding the Point of Presence project, Fahmi said it involves installation in 600 schools across Sabah.

He reported an encouraging progress rate of 85% for this initiative.

“The ministry has set a deadline until the end of next year, and with only 15% remaining, I believe the appointed company can complete it,” he added.

Fahmi acknowledged installation challenges at island schools but expressed confidence in overcoming them.

He urged all schools and military camps involved to implement the Safe Internet Campaign once facilities are completed.

“KIS must be implemented to raise users’ awareness about online safety,” he emphasised.

The minister stated he does not want a situation where fast and affordable internet is provided but remains unsafe.

The Safe Internet Campaign aims to enhance digital literacy and awareness in Malaysia.

It focuses on issues including cyberbullying, online scams, digital gambling and child sexual abuse material.

The campaign targets various societal segments using multiple educational modules.

It teaches users about safe and responsible internet practices. – Bernama
