Motion to suspend Takiyuddin from Parliament deferred to next session

A motion to suspend Kota Bharu MP Takiyuddin Hassan for six months has been postponed to the next Dewan Rakyat meeting after a government request

KUALA LUMPUR: A motion to suspend Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan from Dewan Rakyat sittings for six months has been deferred to the next parliamentary session.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul announced the decision after Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah requested the postponement.

Shamsul Anuar made the request during the winding-up of the debate on the motion in the Dewan Rakyat.

He stated the government sought to defer and bring the motion to the next session after considering all arguments.

However, Shamsul Anuar said Takiyuddin’s statement about a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency training exercise was issued without proper context.

He argued the remarks tarnished the MMEA’s image and demeaned its personnel who safeguard maritime security.

“The MMEA received severe criticism on social media following the Kota Bharu MP’s remarks,” Shamsul Anuar said.

He added that the agency’s good name had been affected on social media platforms.

Shamsul Anuar stated it was the government’s responsibility to defend the agency.

Earlier, he said Takiyuddin spoke about an MMEA incident at Masjid Rusila during a budget debate on October 22.

The minister said Takiyuddin linked the incident to the 1985 Memali tragedy and described it as an attack on a place of worship.

He said the remarks portrayed the exercise as an attempt to intimidate the public.

Shamsul Anuar said this cast a negative image on MMEA personnel and the public service.

He clarified that local representatives were informed the incident was a ‘Fugitives and Evasion Training’ exercise.

The motion sparked tension in the House, forcing Speaker Johari to calm the situation several times.

Takiyuddin participated in the debate and requested the motion be amended.

He asked to be referred to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee to defend himself. – Bernama
