Penang culls over 17,000 crows and captures 10,000 pigeons

MBPP culled 17,750 crows and captured 10,171 pigeons last year to control urban bird populations, citing public littering and feeding as key challenges.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) culled 17,750 crows and captured 10,171 pigeons last year to maintain a clean environment.

The monthly operations were conducted by its Environmental Health Department with the Penang Shooting Club and other associations.

The number of crows culled declined from 23,336 in the previous year through shooting and nest destruction.

MBPP warned that crow numbers could rebound quickly due to irresponsible food waste disposal.

Pigeon captures increased from 9,585 in the previous year, with public feeding remaining a key challenge.

The council issued 55 compounds for feeding pigeons under the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 from March last year.

Other control measures include public awareness campaigns, warning signboards, CCTV monitoring and daily operations.
