Penang JPJ enforces transparency with body-worn cameras

Penang JPJ personnel now use body cameras to record all enforcement interactions, enhancing transparency and protecting both officers and the public

BUKIT MERTAJAM: All Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement personnel are now equipped with body-worn cameras.

State director Zulkifly Ismail said the initiative, which began last November, aims to enhance transparency and integrity in their duties.

The cameras record all interactions between officers and road users.

This protects the rights of the public and shields officers from false allegations.

“We started using the BWCs from last November, after receiving them from the headquarters, and this year we will fully maximise their usage,” Zulkifly said.

He added that the devices are meant to uphold road users’ rights and protect enforcement personnel.

A total of 14 cameras are currently in use daily by on-duty personnel.

Recordings are monitored in real-time by a team at JPJ headquarters to ensure swift response to any complaints.

Zulkifly also announced stepped-up operations against heavy vehicle drivers.

This follows concerns over a rising number of drug abuse cases detected among lorry drivers.

The matter was identified through integrated operations with the National Anti-Drugs Agency and other enforcement bodies.
