GEORGE TOWN: A retired Penang local authority staff member has been remanded for allegedly abusing his position to award contracts worth approximately RM700,000 to his wife’s company.

Magistrate Nur Fadrina Zulkhairi granted the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s application for a remand order until March 1.

The suspect, in his 50s, was arrested yesterday afternoon when he attended the Penang MACC office to give a statement.

A source stated that initial investigations found the suspect used his position in 2024 to appoint his wife’s company for vehicle repair and maintenance works at his former workplace.

Penang MACC director Datuk Karunanithy Subbiah confirmed the arrest, noting the case is being probed under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

He added that investigations are ongoing, involving a review of contract documents and related financial transactions.

The investigation paper will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor upon completion.
