Samarahan electricity upgrade begins in December, completion by 2028

Sarawak approves RM150 million for Samarahan’s electricity upgrade using MVCC technology to reduce outages and support new development projects

KUCHING: A major electricity upgrade project for the Samarahan Division will commence in December and be completed in phases by the end of 2028.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the state government has approved RM150 million for the high-impact initiative.

He said the project will use Medium Voltage Covered Conductor (MVCC) technology to reduce outages caused by bad weather and lightning.

“Samarahan frequently experiences power trips,” he stated during the project launch in Kampung Sampat, Sebuyau.

Abang Johari confirmed Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has been tasked with implementing the upgrade.

The project will cover six districts: Samarahan, Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, Sebuyau, Simunjan and Gedong.

It consists of five main packages including 22.5 km of MVCC lines from Asajaya to Batang Sadong Bridge.

Two subsea cables will span Sungai Batang Sadong as part of the infrastructure improvements.

The project also includes 110 km of MVCC lines from Batang Sadong Bridge to Sebuyau, Simunjan and Gedong.

Additionally, 68.6 km of fibre optic cables will be installed from Asajaya to Sebuyau.

Transformer upgrades and line reorganising will be carried out to meet rising electricity demand.

Abang Johari stressed the state’s commitment to stronger and more sustainable energy infrastructure.

He urged community leaders to cooperate with authorities to prevent cable theft and vandalism during construction.

The Premier said the project supports ongoing development including plans for a new airport and Tanjung Embang port.

Improved road infrastructure to open new growth areas will also benefit from the electricity upgrades.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Utility and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the project will significantly benefit locals.

He noted reduced power disruptions will prevent damage to home and business electrical appliances.

Julaihi added that improved supply stability will drive economic growth and attract new investments.

The ministry and SEB will continue regular line monitoring using drones and thermal scanning.

Vegetation clearing and scheduled maintenance will also be part of ongoing operations. – Bernama
