Skylift suspected in ECRL structure collapse at MRR2

ECRL temporary structure collapse at MRR2 believed caused by skylift collision during unauthorized high-risk work, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR: A skylift collision is suspected to have caused the collapse of a temporary East Coast Rail Link construction structure at Middle Ring Road 2 in Batu Caves.

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health found the high-risk work was conducted without written permission from the main contractor.

Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad confirmed a work prohibition notice has been issued against the contractor involved.

“We want a fair investigation for all parties,” he told reporters during a site inspection today.

“That is why we stopped the work first and issued a work prohibition notice to the contractor.”

A 44-year-old woman driver had a terrifying experience when her car was crushed by the collapsing structure near Gombak Toll Plaza yesterday afternoon.

Abdul Rahman said initial information pointed to skylift movement as the likely cause.

The investigation follows Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, examining the temporary protective structure’s design.

Two other similar temporary structures in the area have also had work suspended until safety is confirmed.

“I have instructed PWD and DOSH to simultaneously look at all similar work structures,” Abdul Rahman stated.

The skylift driver will be called to assist investigations while safety officers verify compliance with Public Works Department requirements.

Abdul Rahman emphasized no compromise on safety for workers and the public.

“At KESUMA, there is no compromise,” he said.

“Even if it is a small case, we still take action.”

A nationwide safety operation including skylift inspections at construction sites will be conducted soon. – Bernama
