A telecommunications tower fire in Kuala Kangsar was put out by a landowner before firefighters arrived, causing damage and service disruptions
KUALA KANGSAR: A telecommunications tower caught fire at the Telekom Malaysia Sungai Perak substation area in Kampung Kelebor yesterday.
The Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) was notified of the incident at 6.36 pm and dispatched a team from the Kuala Kangsar station.
The blaze was visible from the North-South Expressway (PLUS), according to JBPM acting assistant director of operations Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah.
Responding personnel faced delays due to an inaccurate address and highway congestion.
The team took about an hour to reach the forested site within an oil palm plantation, requiring a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Upon arrival, the fire had already been completely extinguished by the landowner.
“The fire was put out with the assistance of the landowner, who used fire extinguishers and stored water to fully extinguish the flames,” Shazlean said in a statement.
Part of the tower was damaged, affecting several communication panels and causing service disruptions.
The disruptions included services from Maxis, with further investigations on the tower continuing this morning.
