Over 100 people evacuated in Terengganu as third flood wave strikes, closing key roads and pushing two rivers above warning levels
KUALA TERENGGANU: A third wave of flooding has struck Terengganu, forcing the evacuation of 103 people from 24 families to three relief centres.
The evacuees are from the districts of Kuala Terengganu, Dungun, and Kuala Nerus following continuous heavy rain since early morning.
In Kuala Terengganu, 61 victims from 14 families are sheltering at Sekolah Kebangsaan Chendering.
Thirteen people from two families are at Dewan Sivik Kampung Seberang Pintasan in Dungun, while 29 victims from eight families are at SK Kompleks Mengabang Telipot in Kuala Nerus.
Several main roads in Kuala Terengganu city are closed due to flash floods, according to police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor.
The affected roads are Jalan Sultan Omar, Jalan Kamaruddin, Jalan Sultan Ismail heading to Bulatan Ladang, and Jalan Kamarudin heading to Pengandang Akar.
The water level at two river stations has exceeded the warning level.
Sungai Telemong in Kuala Ping and Sungai Tersat in Sekayu, Hulu Terengganu, are both above their respective danger marks.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department has issued an alert for continuous rain in four states.
The warning covers the whole of Terengganu and parts of Kelantan from 25 to 28 December.
It also applies to areas in Pahang and Johor from 26 to 29 December.
