Decision on party polls deferred amid heated debate

The party has not agreed to delay the election, stressing that the proposal has yet to be finalised.

SHAH ALAM: Amanah’s leadership faced a heated debate yesterday after delegates proposed postponing the party’s 2026 internal election, sparking concerns over transparency and grassroots representation.

Deputy president Datuk Seri Mujahid Yusof Rawa clarified that the party has not agreed to delay the election, stressing that the proposal has yet to be finalised.

“Even based on the explanation given on Saturday, if we follow the timeline, the party election will only take place next year during the convention.

“So, there’s really no issue for delegates to raise the matter of postponement at this convention because it hasn’t happened yet,” he told theSun.

Mujahid explained that the national leadership had already reviewed all nine resolutions submitted by the party’s resolutions committee, five supporting the continuation of the election and four suggesting a postponement.

“In terms of the national leadership’s decision, it is clear. The resolutions committee presented what came from the grassroots.

“The reason this issue was raised this year is because if the election is scheduled for next year, we need to make a decision now whether to proceed or postpone it,” he said.

He added there was also a practical reason for holding off on a final decision, given the uncertainty over the timing of the next general election.

“From the national standpoint, we asked ourselves why decide now when we don’t even know when the general election will be held? If we decide prematurely, it could be divisive during debates,” Mujahid explained.

He said the resolution was not rejected but accepted as a proposal for future consideration.

“Their concern is understandable. They are afraid that if the issue is not discussed, their voices will not be heard. That’s all. Although they know the election isn’t this year, it’s next year.”

Mujahid added that after Amanah vice-president Datuk Dr Hatta Ramli had clarified the party’s collective position, the motion to postpone the election has been accepted as a proposal at both state and national levels.

“I think Dr Hatta has made it clear. The stand is to accept it as a proposal. The state leadership agrees, the national leadership agrees and that’s the final decision for now,” he said.

“What’s important is that the party remains united and focused. We take note of all views from the grassroots but we don’t want to make a hasty decision when circumstances are still uncertain,” Mujahid added.

The debate was triggered on Saturday when Johor Amanah delegate Ahmad Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda proposed delaying the election until after the 16th general election, citing divisions within PKR and Bersatu following their party polls.

“Johor has full confidence in the leadership of Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Senator Datuk Seri Mujahid Yusof Rawa and the entire Amanah leadership lineup to lead the party into the next general election,” he said, drawing loud cheers from delegates.

However, a Selangor delegate opposed the motion.

Hulu Langat delegate Rusman Abu Samah questioned why such a major decision was being acknowledged without full debate.

“As a party that is inclusive, progressive and brings rahmatan lil alamin (mercy to all), why aren’t we applying those same principles here?

“Delegates have the right to represent members. So it’s unfair to us as delegates because this issue should be discussed, debated and decided at the National Convention,” he said.

Other delegates from Pokok Sena and Port Dickson supported Rusman’s view.

Hatta later clarified that no decision has been made to postpone the party election, which will only be decided during next year’s Amanah convention.
