PAS president Hadi Awang calls for an urgent PN meeting to appoint a new chairman after Muhyiddin
PETALING JAYA: PAS has called for an emergency meeting of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Supreme Council following the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as PN Chairman.
In a statement, PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang confirmed that he received Muhyiddin’s letter of resignation, dated Dec 30, 2025, which took effect on Jan 1, 2026.
He expressed PAS’ respect and appreciation for Muhyiddin’s leadership and contributions to the coalition during his tenure.
“On behalf of PAS, we respect and accept Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s decision and wish to record our highest gratitude for his service and dedication to PN,” he said.
To ensure continuity in PN’s leadership, Abdul Hadi, who also serves as PN deputy chairman, urged that an emergency Supreme Council meeting be convened immediately in accordance with Clause 8.34(b) of the PN Constitution.
The meeting will confirm Muhyiddin’s resignation and appoint a new PN Chairman.
Abdul Hadi stressed that the matter requires urgent attention, as more than 10 days have passed since the resignation took effect.
Muhyiddin had announced his resignation on Dec 29, 2025.
He did not provide an official reason for stepping down, but alleged speculation suggested it was due to tensions between Bersatu and PAS over the Perlis PN assembly and the position of Perlis Menteri Besar, Mohd Shukri Ramli.
Shukri later resigned and was succeeded by Kuala Perlis assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah of Bersatu.
Despite his resignation, several Bersatu leaders urged Muhyiddin to reconsider his decision to step down as PN Chairman.
Meanwhile, PAS leaders have voiced support for their party to take the helm of the coalition.
Abdul Hadi had also said the new PN Chairman would come from PAS, not Bersatu.
