Party fields 73 candidates; Terrence Siambun replaces Leiking in Moyog as Warisan contests all seats
PETALING JAYA: Parti Warisan has excluded its deputy president Datuk Darell Leiking from the candidate roster for the 17th Sabah state election, with the opposition party fielding contenders across all 73 constituencies.
According to Borneo Post, party vice-president Terrence Siambun will replace Leiking in the Moyog constituency, a seat the deputy president secured during the 2020 state polls.
Leiking, who serves as director of Warisan’s election machinery committee, made the candidate announcements at the party’s Kota Kinabalu headquarters on Tuesday. The former Penampang MP previously held the international trade and industry portfolio in the federal cabinet between 2018 and 2020.
Party president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal will seek a third consecutive term representing Senallang, maintaining his position as the party’s standard-bearer in the eastern Sabah constituency.
In a notable three-cornered contest, vice-president Daud Yusof has been assigned to Bongawan, where he faces Parti Cinta Sabah president Tan Sri Anifah Aman and deputy foreign minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin from Umno.
Another vice-president, Junz Wong, will seek re-election in Tanjung Aru against Sabah DAP deputy chairman Chan Foong Hin, creating an opposition-versus-opposition clash.
Among those not contesting from the party’s leadership are secretary-general Loretto Padua Jr and information chief Azis Jamman, signaling strategic reshuffles within the party leadership.
Fauziah Fuad Stephens, daughter of Sabah’s founding father Tun Fuad Stephens who perished in the 1976 Double Six tragedy, will contest the Bengkoka seat, marking a symbolic homecoming to her birthplace.
Federal lawmakers entering the state arena include Kota Belud MP Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis, who will challenge former Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak from Barisan Nasional in Usukan. Shafie’s brother, Datuk Yusof Apdal, has been fielded in Silam, which falls within his Lahad Datu parliamentary constituency.
The party will also field former DAP assemblymen Justin Wong and Calvin Chong, who defected to Warisan, to defend their Sri Tanjong and Elopura seats respectively.
