National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang says the Pongal harvest festival reflects Malaysia’s cultural diversity and strengthens the foundation of national unity.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Pongal festival is a celebration of gratitude and a cornerstone of Malaysia’s national unity.
National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the multi-ethnic harvest celebrations highlight the country’s uniqueness in understanding and respecting diversity.
In a Facebook post for the festival, he said cultural diversity and festivals are key strengths in nation-building.
“Thai Pongal is a harvest thanksgiving festival, observed in conjunction with the harvest season, symbolising appreciation for nature, the earth’s bounty and the hard work of farmers,” he said.
“‘Pongal’ means ‘overflowing’, signifying prosperity, abundance and well-being shared together.”
Aaron expressed hope the celebration would usher in happiness and prosperity for all.
He also said it reinforces the spirit of unity in diversity for a harmonious Malaysia.
The minister extended Pongal Vaalthukal, or Happy Pongal, wishes to everyone.
Pongal marks the beginning of the month of ‘Thai’ in the Tamil calendar.
It is celebrated by preparing sweet rice for family and friends as a gesture of gratitude.
