RM16.1 million allocated to non-Muslim houses of worship since 2016

The Penang government has approved RM16.1 million for 411 non-Muslim houses of worship since 2016, with a new digital system streamlining aid applications.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has approved 411 applications totalling RM16.114 million for non-Muslim houses of worship since 2016.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the allocation through the Trust Fund for Non-Muslim Houses of Worship (RIBI) demonstrates the state’s commitment to safeguarding these institutions.

He stated the financial assistance is intended to ease the burden on managements covering construction, maintenance and emergency costs.

“The management of non-Muslim houses of worship often relies on contributions from devotees, corporate sponsorships and public donations,” Chow said.

He added that conservation works require substantial funding, particularly for older heritage buildings needing specialised expertise.

“If financial constraints persist, maintenance works may be delayed and could pose safety risks to users and devotees,” he noted.

Chow was speaking at a mock cheque presentation ceremony for the Penang Trust Fund/RIBI.

He announced that the RIBI application process has been fully migrated to a digital platform called eRIBI.

The system was developed by the Penang Harmoni Corporation to streamline public service delivery.

“This transformation not only enhances operational efficiency but also reduces administrative costs,” Chow explained.

He added that the platform ensures public resources are utilised optimally.

Today, 78 RIBIs received financial assistance amounting to RM2.495 million.

Chow expressed hope that the incentives would be fully utilised for construction, repair or maintenance works.

He urged all RIBI management bodies to adhere to all procedures and technical standards during project implementation.

This is to ensure safety and smooth progress for the preservation of architectural heritage and cultural identity.
