KUCHING: The Government of Japan has conferred The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star upon Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

This prestigious award recognises his outstanding contributions to strengthening Japan-Malaysia relations.

The Embassy of Japan confirmed Abang Johari was among the recipients of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations announced by the Japanese government.

The decoration specifically honours his distinguished efforts in promoting regional exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Malaysia.

According to the embassy, Abang Johari has been a driving force in advancing economic and energy cooperation between Japan and Sarawak.

His leadership has particularly enhanced collaboration in renewable energy sectors such as hydrogen and ammonia.

Under his guidance, Sarawak has deepened partnerships with leading Japanese companies.

This cooperation contributes significantly to Japan’s energy transition and long-term energy security through stable LNG supply.

The statement further highlighted Abang Johari’s key role in promoting environmental partnerships with Japanese universities and organisations.

These collaborations focus on important reforestation and biodiversity conservation projects.

Beyond economic and environmental cooperation, he has actively supported academic and youth exchanges.

These initiatives have substantially strengthened mutual understanding between Japan and Sarawak.
