Sarawak’s Pan Borneo Highway nears full Grade 1 gazettal

The Pan Borneo Highway in Sarawak is in its final stages of being fully gazetted as a Grade 1 road, a move that will increase vehicle weight limits and boost logistics.

KUCHING: The Pan Borneo Highway in Sarawak is in the final stages of being fully gazetted as a Grade 1 road.

This milestone will enhance the state’s road infrastructure capacity and support economic growth.

Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian said 17 of the highway’s 26 sectors have already been officially gazetted.

The remaining nine sectors are currently undergoing the same process.

The sectors stretch from Teluk Melano in Lundu to Permyjaya in Miri.

Kong said the reclassification effort involved close collaboration between LPKP Sarawak, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak, the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak and the Sarawak Ministry of Transport.

“This gazettement confirms that the Pan Borneo Highway has been constructed to the highest standards, comparable to major roads in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said in a statement.

As a result of the upgrade, the maximum permissible gross vehicle weight for heavy vehicles will be revised upward.

Five-axle lorries will be allowed 45 tonnes, while six-axle lorries can carry 50 tonnes.

“The new limits are expected to benefit lorry operators across Sarawak and improve logistical efficiency statewide,” Kong added.

He said the enhancement reflects the highway’s improved infrastructure and the Federal Government’s commitment to balancing road safety, transport efficiency and economic needs.

LPKP Sarawak will continue to work closely with JPJ, JKR and other relevant agencies.

This is to ensure transport policies remain progressive and supportive of Sarawak’s ongoing development.
