Sultan Nazrin Shah and Tuanku Zara Salim attended the special theatre adaptation of Datuk Lat’s iconic Kampung Boy comic in Ipoh

IPOH: Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah attended the theatre screening of Datuk Lat’s ‘Kampung Boy’ at the Perak National Department for Culture and Arts Complex auditorium.

His Royal Highness was accompanied by Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim.

Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture secretary-general Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot.

JKKN director-general Mohd Amran Mohd Haris and National Artist Datuk Mohammad Nor Mohammad Khalid, better known as Datuk Lat, were also in attendance.

Following the one-hour and 40-minute performance, the royal couple posed for photographs with the cast before departing at 10.15 pm.

JKKN stated the theatre production was presented by MOTAC via JKKN Perak and Pertubuhan Seni Kayangan Perak.

The production was organised in collaboration with the Perak state government and Yayasan Hasanah.

According to JKKN, the performance served as a special tribute to Datuk Lat, who is also a Royal Artist.

It recognised his contributions in elevating Malaysian culture and identity internationally through his outstanding works.

Mohd Amran said the theatre production represented a source of pride for Perak.

He described it as an art project of high value that paid fitting tribute to Datuk Lat.

“Through this visual interpretation of the realist comic, we hope to instil strong cultural values among the audience,” he said.

The production aligns with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, he added.

JKKN is pleased to provide this large-scale platform to strengthen theatre activities and cultivate new audiences.

The theatre brings to life Datuk Lat’s iconic comic depicting his childhood experiences.

The cast includes Taiyuddin Bakar, Safura Ya’cob, Ilya Senario and Hadi Mikail.

Directed by Ridhwan Saidi with a script by Saad Omar, the performance follows adult Lat meeting his younger self.

It reminisces about his childhood memories in Kampung Lalang, Kota Bharu, near Kampar, before moving to Ipoh. – Bernama
