PETALING JAYA: Residents in Selangor, Perak and parts of Pahang have been advised to remain vigilant as Tropical Storm Senyar approaches from midnight tonight until Saturday.

Malaysian Meteorological Department director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Ani said the storm entered the Strait of Malacca at 3.30 pm today.

He warned the system would bring continuous heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas to affected areas.

“Tropical Storm Senyar was detected at Latitude 3.6° North and Longitude 100.4° East, about 94 kilometres northeast of Tanjung Balai, Indonesia,” he said.

The storm is moving eastwards at nine kilometres per hour with maximum wind speeds reaching 50 km per hour.

Mohd Hisham anticipates the system will hit border areas of Perak, Selangor and parts of Pahang starting midnight or early tomorrow morning.

The cyclonic system has a diameter of approximately 100 kilometres and will move towards the South China Sea.

Other affected areas include Kedah, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.

He issued the warning during an emergency MetMalaysia press conference today.
