UEC recognition must follow constitution, not political pressure, says Zambry

Higher Education Minister says UEC decision must be based on the Federal Constitution and Malay language primacy, not political demands.

PUTRAJAYA: Any decision regarding the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate must be based on the Federal Constitution, not political pressure.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the issue cannot be decided based on demands by any party.

He stated the government’s stand remains consistent that the position of Malay as the national language and language of knowledge is a non-negotiable basic principle.

“This principle is applied to all education streams without any exceptions,” he said in a statement.

Zambry added that his ministry agrees with the Prime Minister’s assertion that all education streams must strengthen the use of the Malay language.

This alignment is in line with constitutional requirements and national aspirations for character building and unity.

The ministry will continue to improve the direction of national higher education to be more inclusive, progressive and competitive.

“Emphasis will continue to be placed on mastering the Malay language as a core language of technology and knowledge,” he said.

It will also empower English and other languages like Mandarin, Tamil, Arabic and ethnic languages.

This approach aims to nurture multi-linguistic talent with national values capable of meeting global challenges.
