Malaysia targets 55 gold medals at 2025 ASEAN Para Games

Malaysia’s chef de mission sets a 55-gold target for the 2025 ASEAN Para Games in Thailand, aiming to improve on the 50 golds won in 2023.

THE Malaysian contingent has set a target of 55 gold medals for the upcoming 2025 ASEAN Para Games (APG).

Chef de Mission Mohd Zarrawi Ravi Abdullah described the goal as realistic following stakeholder discussions.

He stated that swimming and athletics remain the primary “gold mines” for the country.

Badminton, table tennis, and cycling are also relied upon to contribute to the medal tally.

“In Cambodia, we achieved 50 golds, and this time we want an improvement,” he said.

Mohd Zarrawi added that the contingent’s preparations are at 100%.

He noted that most athletes are showing a high fighting spirit ahead of the biennial event.

However, he raised concerns about an unfavourable swimming schedule for national athletes.

“I noticed the swimming schedule is quite tight; for the S8 category, there are four events in a single day,” he said.

Mohd Zarrawi stated this does not allow for a recovery period and will be raised at official meetings.

The 2025 ASEAN Para Games will be held in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand from January 20 to 26.

Malaysia finished fourth at the 2023 edition in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The national contingent secured 50 gold, 38 silver, and 35 bronze medals at those games.
