A mechanic is in intensive care after a suspected gas leak from a vehicle’s air-conditioning unit caused an explosion at a workshop in Kelantan.
KOTA BHARU: A mechanic suffered serious injuries in a workshop explosion believed to have been caused by a leaking vehicle air-conditioning unit.
The incident occurred yesterday at a workshop near Kampung Air Merbo, Jedok, in Tanah Merah.
Tanah Merah district police chief Supt Mohd Haki Hasbullah said the victim, 31-year-old Mohd Sharul Nizam Rahim, was repairing a vehicle alone when the explosion happened.
Police received a public report about the incident at approximately 8 pm.
“The victim had sustained serious injuries to his right leg and was sent to Tanah Merah Hospital for further treatment,” Mohd Haki said.
He confirmed the victim is currently in the intensive care unit and his condition has not yet been stabilised.
Preliminary investigations point to a possible gas leak from an air-conditioning unit as the cause.
Mohd Haki stated that police are still investigating the exact cause of the blast.
A police forensic unit and a bomb disposal unit are assisting the Fire and Rescue Department in the probe.
“Checks at the incident location revealed there were no CCTVs or any independent witnesses at the location,” he added.
