Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urges Malaysians to strengthen togetherness and mutual respect as he extends his Pongal greetings to the Tamil community.
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for mutual understanding and respect to be the foundation of national harmony.
In his Pongal greeting today, he urged all communities to strengthen the spirit of togetherness despite differences in views or beliefs.
He said this is essential for building a peaceful and prosperous nation.
“I hope the Pongal celebrations are observed with joy, harmony and meaningful moments with family and loved ones,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.
“The festival also reminds us of the values of gratitude, togetherness and mutual respect.”
He noted that Pongal is a Tamil harvest festival marking gratitude for abundant harvests.
It also signals the start of the Thai month in the Tamil calendar.
The four-day celebration begins with Bhogi, followed by Thai Pongal, which involves offering sweet rice to the Sun God.
It continues with Mattu Pongal, honouring livestock, and concludes with Kaanum Pongal for family reunions.
