Amazon to cut 14,000 jobs globally as it invests in AI

The Sun Webdesk

PARIS: US online retail giant Amazon announced on Tuesday that it is eliminating 14,000 jobs globally to streamline its operations.

The company stated these cuts are part of its ongoing effort to strengthen the business by reducing bureaucracy and reallocating resources.

Amazon confirmed the reductions will result in an overall decrease of approximately 14,000 roles in its corporate workforce.

Senior vice-president Beth Galetti described artificial intelligence as the most transformative technology since the internet.

She added that AI is enabling companies to innovate at a much faster pace than ever before.

American media had previously reported that large-scale layoffs were imminent at the online retailer.

Those reports suggested a worldwide total of 30,000 job cuts could occur over several months.

The reported cuts would target departments including human resources, advertising, and management.

Amazon employs over 350,000 office workers as part of its total workforce of more than 1.5 million employees.

Galetti indicated that Tuesday’s announced job cuts represent only a first step.

She stated the company expects to continue hiring in key strategic areas throughout 2026.

Amazon also plans to find additional opportunities to remove management layers and increase operational efficiency next year.
