Trump sets November 27 deadline for Ukraine to accept peace plan

President Trump gives Ukraine until November 27 to accept a 28-point US peace plan requiring territorial concessions to Russia and a non-NATO pledge.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has indicated November 27 as the deadline for Ukraine to accept his administration’s plan to end the war with Russia.

“I’ve had a lot of deadlines, but if things are working well, you tend to extend the deadlines,” Trump told Fox Radio. “But Thursday is, we think, an appropriate time.”

The 28-point US plan, obtained by AFP, would require Ukraine to cede eastern territory to Russia and significantly reduce its army size.

Kyiv would also pledge never to join NATO and would not receive requested Western peacekeepers.

European warplanes would instead be stationed in Poland to protect Ukraine under the proposed arrangement.

Trump argued that continued fighting would still result in Ukraine losing the territories it would cede under the plan.

“Say what you want, they were very brave,” he said of Ukrainian forces fighting Russian invaders.

The Republican leader claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin “is not looking for more war” despite Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Trump stated Putin was “taking punishment” for a conflict that has lasted nearly four years instead of being “a one-day war.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pushed back against the American plan on Friday.

Zelensky said he would not “betray” his country over a document viewed in Kyiv as highly favorable to the Kremlin.

The White House has assured that it has discussed the plan equally with both Kyiv and Moscow. – AFP
