Nick Reiner, 32, will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife.
LOS ANGELES: The son of famed Hollywood director Rob Reiner will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the brutal slaying of his parents.
Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges on Tuesday, stating that Nick Reiner, 32, could face the death penalty if convicted.
“These charges will be two counts of first degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders,” said Hochman.
He added that the charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
Reiner is expected to be arraigned as soon as he is medically cleared to appear at a Los Angeles courthouse.
His lawyer, Alan Jackson, told reporters the sheriff’s department was taking the clearance “on a day-by-day basis.”
Nick Reiner was arrested on Sunday after the bodies of his 78-year-old father and 70-year-old mother, Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered at their Brentwood home.
The couple were reportedly stabbed to death.
US media reports indicate Nick Reiner had argued with his parents at a Hollywood party on Saturday evening.
The bodies were found on Sunday afternoon by the couple’s daughter, who told police another family member had killed them.
Entertainers and politicians paid tribute to the beloved filmmaker following his death.
Actor-director Ben Stiller described Rob Reiner as “a kind caring person who was really really funny.”
Former US president Barack Obama said he and his wife, Michelle, were “heartbroken.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom said Reiner had “made California a better place.”
In contrast, former president Donald Trump suggested in a social media post that Reiner’s criticism of him had contributed to the murder.
Two prominent right-wing Republicans called Trump’s comments “inappropriate and disrespectful.”
