LOS ANGELES: Police have charged the son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner with murder following a brutal double killing.
Nick Reiner, 32, was detained hours after the bodies of his parents were discovered in the upscale Brentwood neighbourhood on Sunday.
Los Angeles police chief Jim McDonnell confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was booked for murder.
Multiple reports indicate the 78-year-old actor-director and his 70-year-old wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were stabbed to death.
Media outlets reported Nick Reiner had argued with his parents at a Hollywood party on Saturday evening.
Entertainment outlet TMZ said the bodies were found by the couple’s daughter, who told police another family member was responsible.
As tributes poured in, former US president Donald Trump made controversial comments about the deaths.
Trump suggested Reiner brought on his own murder by criticising him, citing what he called “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
The comments were blasted as inappropriate by some prominent Republicans, including Representative Thomas Massie.
In a twist, Michele Reiner took the portrait photograph that appeared on Trump’s memoir “The Art of the Deal.”
Rob Reiner was a politically active supporter of progressive causes who had warned about Trump.
He backed efforts to secure equal gay marriage rights and helped create California’s First 5 child development program.
The son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, he first found fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on “All in the Family.”
He transitioned to directing classic films like “This is Spinal Tap,” “The Princess Bride,” and “A Few Good Men.”
His film “When Harry Met Sally” featured the legendary fake orgasm scene in a restaurant.
Movie heavyweight John Cusack said he was at a loss for words about the deaths.
Author Stephen King, whose work was the basis for “Stand By Me,” lauded a wonderful friend.
Actor Kathy Bates, who won an Oscar for her part in Reiner’s “Misery,” said he was brilliant and kind.
Former president Barack Obama said he and his wife Michelle were heartbroken by the news.
