President Trump downplays Venezuela war concerns but says Maduro’s days are numbered amid US military strikes in Caribbean
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump sent mixed signals about potential US intervention in Venezuela during a recent television interview.
He played down concerns of imminent war against the South American nation while stating its leader Nicolas Maduro’s days were numbered.
Trump expressed doubt about going to war with Venezuela during his appearance on the “60 Minutes” program.
However, he affirmed his belief that Maduro’s time as president was coming to an end.
Maduro faces indictment on drug charges in the United States and has accused Washington of using drug trafficking as a pretext for regime change.
The Venezuelan leader claims the United States aims to seize his country’s oil reserves through these actions.
More than 15 US strikes on boats in the Caribbean and Pacific have killed at least 65 people in recent weeks.
The latest military action occurred on Saturday, drawing criticism from regional governments.
Experts describe these attacks as extrajudicial killings despite targeting known traffickers.
Washington has not publicly presented evidence that its targets were smuggling narcotics or posed threats. – AFP
