500 sports school students and former national athletes joined the King’s Baton Relay in Malaysia for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
A total of 500 students from sports schools across the country participated in the King’s Baton Relay running event for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The event featured former national gymnast and silver medalist Ng Shu Wai, who competed at the Manchester 2002 and Melbourne 2006 editions.
National sprint queen Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli, who represented Malaysia at the Gold Coast 2018 edition, also took part in the relay.
The event introduced the specially designed Malaysian edition baton carried in a procession around the Universiti Putra Malaysia Sports Academy Stadium.
Olympic Council of Malaysia deputy president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said the baton was designed by Sepatu Art with a Visit Malaysia Year 2026 theme.
He stated that the baton also displays themes of flora and fauna as well as multi-racial unity intertwined with each other.
Nur Azmi explained that all participating countries have their own baton designs which will be collected at the official opening ceremony.
The King’s Baton Relay began at Buckingham Palace, England, on March 10 in conjunction with Commonwealth Day.
This tradition aims to celebrate, connect and ignite community spirit across the Commonwealth ahead of the games.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow. – Bernama
