Aaron Chia targets SEA Games medal after state award

National shuttler Aaron Chia shifts focus to SEA Games preparations after receiving Melaka’s top sports honour, eyeing potential new doubles partnership.

NATIONAL men’s doubles shuttler Aaron Chia Teng Fong will concentrate fully on preparations for next month’s SEA Games in Thailand after receiving the Melaka State Sportsman award.

The 28-year-old Batu Berendam native said he is currently in a dedicated training phase without tournament participation following last month’s packed European schedule.

“This award certainly gives me extra motivation, and I am very grateful to the Melaka state government for its continuous support,” he told reporters after receiving the award from Melaka Governor Tun Mohd Ali Rustam.

Aaron received a trophy, challenge trophy and RM3,000 cash prize for his second consecutive state sportsman title.

He revealed he might pair with another player in the men’s doubles event as a trial for a new partnership, though any decision will be made by the coach.

The shuttler expressed confidence about potential partnerships with fellow Melaka-born athletes Man Wei Chong or Tee Kai Wun at the upcoming SEA Games.

Following the regional games, Aaron and regular partner Soh Wooi Yik will reunite for December’s World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China.

His award recognition follows outstanding international performances including a bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships in Copenhagen, a bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and runner-up finish at the 2024 All England Championships. – Bernama

Asaji birdied the par-five 18th after Wang found water and made bogey. Both had finished regulation play on 19-under after draining matching 10-foot birdie putts on the last. Asaji closed with a five-under 67, while Wang shot 68. Thailand’s Rattanon Wannasrichan and Korea’s Soomin Lee tied for third, one shot back, in the penultimate event of The International Series.
