The national doubles pairs see mixed results at India Open with retirements, wins, and exits marking the first round.
NATIONAL men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik advanced to the second round of the India Open after their compatriots retired.
Aaron-Wooi Yik were leading 21-12, 11-6 when the pair of Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai conceded the match after 21 minutes.
“Aaron (Tai) retired suffering a backache,” a Badminton World Federation statement confirmed.
They will next face Japan’s Takumi Nomura and Yuichi Shimogami, who narrowly defeated another Malaysian pair, Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King, 26-28, 21-18, 22-20.
Another Malaysian men’s pair, Chia Weijie and Lwi Sheng Hao, were eliminated by Japan’s Hiroki Midorikawa and Kyohei Yamashita 18-21, 15-21.
Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin also progressed after a comeback win over professional pair Choi Sol Gyu and Goh V Shem 19-21, 21-16, 21-10.
They will face either England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy or Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan next.
In women’s doubles, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah secured a straight-sets victory over India’s Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi 21-18, 21-6.
They are set to meet France’s Margot Lambert and Camille Pognante in the next round.
Another Malaysian women’s pair, Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting, were eliminated by Taiwan’s Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En-Tzu 17-21, 15-21.
