Malaysia’s 20-year wait for a SEA Games men’s team badminton gold continues after a 0-3 final defeat to arch-rivals Indonesia in Pathum Thani.
MALAYSIA’s two-decade wait for a SEA Games men’s team badminton gold medal continues.
The national team was defeated 0-3 by arch-rivals Indonesia in the final at the SEA Games Thailand 2025 today.
The challenge began poorly when Leong Jun Hao lost his singles match to Alwi Farhan 12-21, 19-21.
The setback deepened as world number two doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik were outplayed 12-21, 12-21 by Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani.
Aaron admitted that too many unforced errors proved costly for his pair.
Wooi Yik said they were disappointed at failing to level the tie for Malaysia.
Indonesia sealed the gold when Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah defeated Justin Hoh 21-12, 21-14 in the second singles match.
Justin admitted the 0-2 deficit added extra pressure when he stepped onto the court.
“His team was leading with a two-point advantage. He was very confident and I felt a bit of pressure on me,” he said.
The result means Malaysia failed to avenge their 1-3 defeat to Indonesia in the 2023 final in Phnom Penh.
Justin will now shift his focus to the individual event starting tomorrow.
He is set to face the third seed, Jason Teh of Singapore, in his opening match.
