Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors assistant coach Mauricio Taricco receives five-match ban and fine for making racist slanted-eye gesture during K-League match.
SEOUL: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors assistant coach Mauricio Taricco has been suspended for five matches by the K-League disciplinary committee for making a racist gesture.
The Argentine coach was sent off during Jeonbuk’s match against Daejeon Hana Citizen on November 8 after arguing with the referee over a penalty appeal.
The 52-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur player then shouted “racista” at the official before making a slanted-eye gesture, according to a K-League statement.
Taricco claimed to the committee that he had pointed to his eyes to indicate the referee missed a handball incident.
“The disciplinary committee stated that ‘the evaluation of a specific act should be based on the universal meaning of the act as expressed, rather than the perpetrator’s stated intentions,'” the K-League said.
“Based on these criteria, coach Taricco’s actions were identical to the widely known ‘slant-eye’ derogatory gesture against Asians and sufficiently inflicted feelings of racial insult on the recipient.”
The committee also fined Taricco 20 million won (approximately RM50,000). – Reuters
