KBS to discuss Deaflympics 2025 rewards with MSN for fair incentives

Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) will review SHAKAM rewards for deaf athletes at Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics to ensure fair and sustainable celebration.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) will hold fresh discussions with the National Sports Council regarding rewards under the national sports incentive scheme for deaf athletes medalling at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics.

Minister Hannah Yeoh stated these discussions are essential to align reward rates with available funds and ensure equality across all athlete categories.

“We must discuss this first with MSN as I mentioned earlier, especially since the Prime Minister is providing special funds for them this year.”

“We need to ensure the funds are sufficient and determine appropriate reward rates through proper discussion.”

Yeoh emphasised the ministry consistently values every national athlete’s sacrifices but must conduct regular reviews for inclusive and prudent decisions.

The Malaysian Deaf Sports Association previously received an MSN letter stating the 2025 Deaf SEA Games could not be considered under SHAKAM.

Malaysian deaf athletes won 25 gold, 16 silver, and 11 bronze medals at those games, earning the overall champion title.

The Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics is scheduled for November 15 to 26.

Regarding youth social challenges, Yeoh noted the ‘incel’ phenomenon signals a need to strengthen youth interaction spaces and value formation.

Consequently, the ministry will expand Rakan Muda sports programmes next year to build character, discipline, and mutual respect.

“Sports teach youth to respect rules and provide conflict resolution opportunities that home environments may lack.”

Yeoh confirmed sports now serve as the primary approach to rebuild community spirit and social values among Malaysian youth. – Bernama
