Malaysia fall short in regu semifinal at Sepak Takraw World Cup

Malaysia’s regu team lost 0-2 to Myanmar in the World Cup semifinals, ending their title defence.

MALAYSIA failed to defend their regu title after losing 0-2 to Myanmar in the 2026 Sepak Takraw World Cup semi-final match at Titiwangsa Stadium today.

Malaysians Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi, Farhan Adam and Mohamad Azlan Alias failed to match the consistent rhythm of their opponents and lost 9-15 in the first set.

Muhammad Haziq Hairul Nizam replaced Muhammad Syahir, who seemed to have sustained an injury, in an effort to change the team’s fortunes, but they were unable to stop the Myanmar trio of Thant Zin Tun, Aung Aung and Ye Htet to win 15-10 and book a place in the final.

Coach Ahmad Jais Baharun admitted that the team’s performance was not to his liking but accepted the the loss.

“We lost to Myanmar and I have to accept it with an open heart that our regu players’ performance was not at its usual.

“This was an advantage to the Myanmar team. If we look at their performance in terms of attack and defence, they were better and stronger compared to the Malaysian team,” he said after the match.

Myanmar will go up against Thailand, who beat South Korea 2-1 in the other semi-final match.
