Malaysia pushes for greater women’s participation in sports

Youth and Sports Ministry encourages more women in sports, aiming to boost athlete numbers and empower through grassroots initiatives.

THE Youth and Sports Ministry is actively encouraging greater female participation in sports to increase the nation’s pool of women athletes.

Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said current involvement is encouraging, with women displaying a high level of fighting spirit in their disciplines.

“We see many of these women have become icons that make our country proud,” he said.

He stated the ministry wants to encourage more women to participate, especially at the grassroots level.

Dr Mohammed Taufiq emphasised that sports should unite people and not be differentiated by gender or background.

“We want to empower women in sports, and sports also inculcates discipline and team spirit,” he added.

He believes the country is on the right track with many women athletes capable of representing Malaysia.

To achieve this, he said collaboration with schools, universities and the National Sports Council is needed to lift talent to a higher level.

He made these comments after visiting the Milo All Girls Touch Rugby Series 2026 at the Malaysian Teaching Institute Sultan Abdul Halim Campus.
