PSG retain Ligue 1 lead despite Lorient draw and Doue injury

Paris Saint-Germain stay top of Ligue 1 after 1-1 draw with Lorient as Desire Doue suffers thigh injury ahead of Bayern Munich clash.

PARIS Saint-Germain maintained their position at the top of Ligue 1 despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Lorient on Wednesday.

The French champions suffered a significant setback when star forward Desire Doue sustained a right thigh injury on the hour mark.

Doue was carried from the field grimacing in pain immediately raising concerns about his availability for next week’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich.

The 20-year-old had only recently returned to full fitness following an injury sustained while playing for France in September.

Doue scored twice in PSG’s 7-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in their previous Champions League outing making his potential absence against Bayern a serious blow.

PSG coach Luis Enrique expressed concern about the injury without providing specific details about the severity.

“It’s always bad news when there are injuries,” remarked the Spaniard.

“It’s a strange injury; I don’t know exactly his condition. I hope it’s not a serious injury,” added the PSG coach.

An AFP journalist observed Doue leaving the locker room on crutches with his head down and a hood over his head after the match.

The young forward avoided putting weight on his right leg as he boarded the PSG team bus.

Nuno Mendes had given PSG the lead in the 49th minute only for Igor Silva to equalise for Lorient seconds later.

Luis Enrique was blunt in his assessment of his team’s performance against the Brittany side.

“We didn’t deserve the victory, we played a poor match,” he said.

“It’s a shame because we need points and we want to earn points.”

“They defended very well, you have to stay focused for the full 90 minutes, and it’s difficult.”

PSG maintained their table-topping position after Marseille could only manage a 2-2 home draw with bottom-placed Angers.

Angers had taken a first-half lead before Robinio Vaz scored twice seemingly securing victory for Marseille.

Ousmane Camara’s injury-time equaliser lifted Angers out of the relegation zone while Marseille remained in third position.

Monaco climbed to second place just one point behind PSG after defeating Nantes 5-3 in an entertaining encounter.

Lens dropped to sixth position following a 2-0 defeat to Metz who claimed their first victory of the season.

Gauthier Hein scored both goals for Metz before receiving a red card late in the match.

Nice registered a 2-0 home victory over Lille while Le Havre beat Brest 1-0 in other Ligue 1 fixtures.

Paris FC and Lyon played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in the capital.

Strasbourg moved up to fourth position with a comprehensive 3-0 home victory over Auxerre. – AFP
