Kelantan KPDN foils smuggling of subsidised goods near Thai border

KPDN enforcement seized over 600kg of sugar and cooking oil at a Pasir Mas smuggling base, with one suspect escaping across the Golok River.

KELANTAN: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has thwarted a smuggling attempt involving subsidised cooking oil and sugar.

The operation targeted an illegal base in Pasir Mas, near the Malaysia-Thailand border, following a public tip-off.

Kelantan KPDN deputy director Aswadi Jaafar said enforcement officers conducted surveillance over four days with the General Operations Force.

Intelligence revealed four Proton Waja cars were used to transport the controlled goods to a location known as ‘Lan Bundle’.

“The supplies were then transferred into boats to be smuggled across the Golok River to the border,” Aswadi stated in a press release.

During the raid, one suspect jumped into the Golok River and managed to evade capture.

Officers discovered 96 kg of sugar and 510 kg of cooking oil during a search of the vehicle.

The operation was launched based on reports of suspicious and repeated transfers of controlled goods in the area.

Aswadi confirmed the smuggling activity was orchestrated by licensed retailers.
