KUALA LUMPUR: The government has allocated RM33.05 million this year to upgrade road safety infrastructure at 94 strategic locations across Peninsular Malaysia, including improvements at accident-prone areas and pedestrian crossings.
Speaking at the Madani Care Programme for the 2026 Road Safety Infrastructure Upgrade Programme today, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the allocation comprised RM27.85 million for 77 locations under the Accident-Prone Location Improvement Programme (Blackspot) and RM5.2 million for 17 Signalised At-Grade Pedestrian Crossing (LPKSI) sites.
He said the projects, implemented under the Cakna Madani Programme: Road Safety Infrastructure Upgrade Programme 2026, would benefit communities in 11 states and 36 districts.
“Road user safety remains a national priority that cannot be compromised. The government will continue strengthening efforts to ensure the country’s road infrastructure remains safe, efficient and sustainable to protect lives and safeguard the well-being of the people,” he said.
Nanta said the Blackspot Programme adopts a targeted, data-driven approach by using accident records from the Road Accident Management System (RAMS) to identify high-risk locations requiring intervention.
He said that between 2021 and 2025, a total of 342 blackspot locations had been upgraded at a cost of RM118.5 million.
“This data-driven approach enables interventions to be planned and implemented more accurately, strategically and effectively, ensuring government resources are utilised optimally to address the factors contributing to road accidents,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nanta said the LPKSI Programme, introduced in 2018, aims to improve pedestrian safety by providing safer and more organised crossing facilities, particularly near schools, healthcare facilities and areas with high pedestrian traffic.
As of 2025, he said, 154 locations had been equipped with signalised pedestrian crossings, involving a total allocation of RM39.79 million.
During the ceremony, the Works Ministry also handed over Letters of Acceptance (SST) to 32 contractors appointed to implement Phase Two of the Blackspot Programme.
Nanta urged the contractors to carry out their responsibilities with integrity, professionalism and commitment to ensure the projects are completed on schedule and in accordance with the required quality standards.
He added that the programme would not only enhance road safety but also contribute to local economic growth through the participation of local contractors, job creation and increased economic activity in the affected areas.
