Lavrov accuses US of smashing world order with Venezuela raid, Iran threats

Russia’s Lavrov says US actions in Venezuela and threats against Iran violate international law and damage Washington’s global credibility.

MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the United States of fragmenting the international system it helped build.

He cited an illegal operation to topple Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and threats of attack against Iran as evidence.

“We are talking about a gross violation of international law,” Lavrov said of the US action against Maduro.

He stated that Russia remains fully committed to its agreements with Venezuela, a key ally.

Lavrov suggested the US is damaging its own global image by abandoning the principles it long promoted.

“Our American colleagues look unreliable when they act in this way,” he told a news conference in Moscow.

When asked about reported US envoys seeking to meet President Vladimir Putin, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s openness to talks.

He said Putin has repeatedly expressed readiness for serious discussions about peace in Ukraine.

Lavrov added it would be helpful if Washington briefed Moscow on the latest peace proposals for Ukraine. – Reuters
