Trump hints at Greenland resolution after Denmark talks

US President Trump suggests a Greenland solution may ‘work out’ after Denmark fails to change his stance on wanting to conquer the island

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has hinted at a potential resolution over Greenland, despite Denmark stating it failed to change his administration’s stance on wanting to conquer the island.

Trump spoke after a White House meeting between Danish and Greenlandic ministers and US officials JD Vance and Marco Rubio. “I have a very good relationship with Denmark, and we’ll see how it all works out. I think something will work out,” Trump said without elaborating.

He again suggested Denmark was powerless if Russia or China wanted to occupy Greenland, but added, “There’s everything we can do.”

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said a US takeover was “absolutely not necessary.” He confirmed the visitors did not manage to shift the American position. “It’s clear that the president has this wish of conquering over Greenland,” Lokke told reporters.

“We therefore still have a fundamental disagreement, but we also agree to disagree,” he said, calling the issue “very emotional” for Greenland and Denmark.

Lokke said ideas disrespecting Denmark’s territorial integrity and Greenland’s right to self-determination were “totally unacceptable.” He described the tone as “constructive” and said a committee would meet within weeks to seek possible headway.

During the talks, the White House posted a mocking social media image captioned “Which way, Greenland man?” It depicted dogsleds heading toward US, Chinese, and Russian flags.

Denmark has promised to increase its military presence in Greenland and announced immediate military exercises with Sweden. Germany and France also said they would send troops to Greenland in solidarity.

In Nuuk, residents expressed relief the meeting appeared cordial. “I am more calm now, and I feel more safe. I had felt very much unsafe lately,” said Ivaana Egede Larsen, 43.
