Umno proposes reinstating UPSR and PT3 national school exams

Umno president Ahmad Zahid says the party wants UPSR and PT3 exams reinstated and a protection act for teachers introduced.

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has formally proposed the reinstatement of two key national examinations.

The party wants the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3) examinations brought back into the education system.

Its president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, announced the proposal during the 2025 Umno General Assembly.

He stated that Perak Umno chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir has been tasked with conveying the mandate to the government.

“We want these two examinations reinstated, and Dr Zambry has been given the responsibility to convey this mandate,” Ahmad Zahid said.

Dr Zambry is also the Minister of Higher Education.

Ahmad Zahid, who is the Deputy Prime Minister, also revealed a second proposal for a ‘protection act’ for teachers.

The act is intended to safeguard educators when carrying out student disciplinary responsibilities.

He linked the proposal to concerns over teachers’ workload and welfare.

“In the past, if students were caned by teachers and then complained to their parents at home, they would be caned again, unlike the situation today,” he said.
