Kuching man arrested after viral Al-Quran desecration video

57-year-old detained in Kuching following viral videos showing Quran being torn; mental health suspected

KUCHING: The police, here, have apprehended a 57-year-old local man following the circulation of viral videos depicting the desecration of the Al-Quran on city streets.

Kuching district police chief Assistant Commissioner Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed the arrest took place at a food establishment within a commercial center in the city.

According to Alexson, authorities received reports after two separate videos of the incident surfaced on social media platforms. Investigation revealed that the incident occurred on January 23 at approximately 8.40pm.

“CCTV recordings from Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman heading towards Jalan Borneo have verified the incident,” the police chief stated.

Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect may be experiencing mental health difficulties, ACP Alexson disclosed. Evidence gathered thus far indicates the actions were not intended to provoke racial or religious tensions within the community.

Authorities are pursuing charges under Section 295 of the Penal Code, which addresses the defiling of places of worship or sacred objects. Conviction under this provision carries penalties of up to two years imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Investigators are also examining potential violations under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which pertains to improper use of network facilities or services. This offense carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both upon conviction.

The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to complete their inquiries.
