Brazil’s President Lula to have cataract surgery this week

Brazilian President Lula, 80, will undergo cataract surgery on his left eye on Friday but maintains his normal work schedule ahead of elections.

BRASÍLIA: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will undergo surgery on Friday to treat a cataract in his left eye.

The 80-year-old leader completed pre-surgery checks on Thursday before returning to his normal work routine.

His government announced the upcoming procedure in a statement from the presidency.

Lula plans to seek a fourth term in the presidential elections this October, shortly before his 81st birthday.

“I’m 80 years old, but if they knew the drive I have to govern this country, they wouldn’t mess around,” Lula said in December.

He added that “only those with an empty mind grow old.”

The government did not specify if the president will need to step back from his duties following the surgery.

Lula is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington in March.

In December 2024, the Brazilian leader underwent emergency surgery to stop a brain bleed after a serious fall.
