PETALING JAYA: Three Malakoff Corporation Bhd gas power plants with an aggregate capacity of 2,082MW have been selected for extension of operations until Dec 31, 2029, following notification from the Energy Commission.
The extension enables these plants to continue supplying electricity to the national grid, supporting Malaysia’s ongoing energy needs amid sustained demand and transition.
The extensions cover power plants operated by Malakoff’s subsidiaries. These include two plants in Lumut, Perak – the 1,303MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant owned by Segari Energy Ventures Sdn Bhd (SEV) and the 429MW open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) power plant owned by GB3 Sdn Bhd; as well as the 350MW CCGT Prai Power Plant in Penang owned by Prai Power Sdn Bhd.
Malakoff, in a statement, said it will enter into new power purchase agreements with Tenaga Nasional Bhd for each plant, enabling the company to generate the required capacity and deliver electricity throughout the extension period.
The SEV Lumut power plant has been in operation since 1996. The GB3 Lumut power plant commenced operations in 2001, while the Prai power plant commenced operations in 2003.
These gas plants constitute a long-standing generation base that has consistently supported the electricity supply in Peninsular Malaysia.
With a combined capacity of 2,082MW, these plants provide dependable, flexible generation that helps maintain grid stability and reserve margin, particularly during periods of high electricity demand.
Commenting on the success in securing the extended lifeline for the gas power plants, Malakoff group CEO Syahrunizam Tan Sri Samsudin said the extension is a necessity and reflects a practical and responsible approach to meeting Malaysia’s energy needs.
“These power plants have supported the national grid with a consistent performance record over many years.
“Extending their operations allows proven gas-fired facilities to continue to contribute reliable, flexible capacity, particularly during periods of high demand. This supports energy security while making effective use of existing infrastructure in a cost-efficient manner,“ he said.
Syahrunizam said these plants produce lower emissions compared to other fossil fuel
sources.
“This means we are not only ensuring a reliable and continuous power supply to the grid, but also actively reducing our carbon footprint by leveraging natural gas as a transitional fuel, enabling our plants to remain relevant as the country’s energy mix evolves,“ he said.
Syahrunizam noted that CCGT and OCGT plants like these continue to play an important role in the energy transition by providing efficient, responsive generation. Their continued operation reflects the consistent standards applied in their operation and maintenance over the years.
“The extensions are also expected to contribute positively to Malakoff’s earnings and net assets over the extension period, highlighting the long-term value of disciplined asset management,” he said.
