Penang police report eight cases and two arrests during Thaipusam

Penang police recorded eight reports and made two arrests during the Thaipusam festivities, which saw an estimated 1.1 million attendees.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police received eight reports and opened four investigation papers during the three-day Thaipusam celebration.

State Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the cases involved two violent crimes and two property crimes, leading to the arrest of two local men.

He stated that the festivities, which began last Saturday, proceeded in an orderly, smooth, and safe manner as planned.

Approximately 1.1 million devotees and visitors were estimated to have attended the celebrations in Penang over a four-day period.

A total of 1,280 police personnel were deployed to ensure the safety of all attendees and road users.

Azizee confirmed that the journey of the golden and silver chariots was carried out smoothly under strict police supervision.

He expressed the force’s highest appreciation to all parties involved in the security operations.

“I consider this to be among the most successful and safest celebrations compared to previous years,” he said.
